I was asked to play the bass part to Melissa Etheridge's 1988 pop hit "Like The Way I Do" for a Music Minus-One/ Karaoke track. I remembered playing that song back in the late 80's, early 90's with a band, so I thought no worries. It had to be completed quickly, and since I remembered most of the song, I played pretty much what I used to play live, way back when. Once the file was delivered, I asked the producer if I could use his tracks for my site. He agreed. So I set out to transcribe the song in order to create a blogpost with the audio and transcription. Boy, was I in for a surprise!...I had overseen a lot of little nuances, notes, & bits that did not make it to my bass track, which are present in the original song. So here you have it, a pretty accurate transcription (w/ tabs) of Kevin McCormick's slap bass line for Melissa Etheridge classic "Like the Way I Do" as well as a not-so-accurate audio rendition of my sound-alike track, up-front in the mix, for your listening pleasure, or for the sake of comparison. ;-)
On a historical note, I remember this song to be one of the few songs to prominently feature Slap bass within the context of a mainstream pop hit. There were others, such as Level 42 & Pino Palladino slapping his fretless bass, but not that many.
